Stutz on Netflix
Actor and Director, Jonah Hill, introduces us in “Stutz” to Dr. Phil Stutz, his therapist. Where we not only see Hill’s vulnerability but we learn the doctor’s tools that can have a hand in helping us. Also, hopefully, gives us the support to seek out help if we so need it by removing the stigma of mental health and how important it can be to our overall health.
The weekend is usually my catch-up time. Gathering the snacks I had not prepared for needing a box of tissues. Word of advice, keep them near. I saw the Netflix documentary twice and stopped mid-way the first time to recommend it to my mother.
Dr. Phil Stutz alongside Jonah Hill shares Stutz’s tools, which are visualization exercises that make complicated concepts into something manageable. The clever part of this is that each tool is accompanied by a hand-drawn illustration the patient keeps and revisits after their sessions. Not a cure-all, not a fix-all, but a constant tune-up that you can work with.
This documentary is more than a therapy session, it navigates the life of Phil Stutz. The relationship and respect Jonah Hill and the doctor have for each other is palpable and filled my heart. A sweet, intelligent, helpful man full of empathy and who truly cares about the science of the mind is a man who has his trauma. Taking his advice as Jonah helps him navigate certain topics regarding the doctor’s relationship status and their experience with grief.
CE’s Review
Finally, I say this: I will watch Stutz again and again. Jonah Hill, you should be so proud of this! It is so helpful and useful information. I cannot wait to carry on the rest of my days using Stutz’s Tools. We will all be a lot more sympathetic to ourselves and others by using Dr. Stutz’s method.
